Cynthia Lewis Paperworks & Design
- Artist Statement:
- My work ranges from mixed media pieces to woven wall pieces and works on and of handmade paper. Custom handmade paper is made to the specifications of a particular client. My studio is a small hand papermaking facility equipped with a hollander beater, hydraulic press, various moulds and deckles for sheet formation, a vacuum system for art pieces, and an extensive drying system for flat and relief work in hand made paper. Class in papermaking as well as 4 harness loom weaving will be offered beginning in 2009. At Open Studio both art work and handmade paper will be offered for sale, and a class schedule will be available at that time.
- Biography:
- Cynthia Lewis has owned and operated Cynthia Lewis Paperworks and Design since 2003. I have slowly expanded my capabilities with the accumulation of equipment for both production paper making and art work. I have was introduced to papermaking as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and after graduation I worked at the reknowned Carriage House Paper then in Somerville, MA and now located in Brooklyn, NY. I have an MFA from the University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth in the Program in Artisanry. Currently my work can be seen locally at the North Adams Artists Co-op at 107 Main Street and at Tsubo Massage at 136 Water Street in Williamstown. I created mixed media wall pieces combining paper and woven surfaces, with a textile sensibility that defines my work.
